Q-School Day Two- Results and Report.

James Richardson

James Richardson was among one of the four players to secure tour-cards on day two at Q-School in Wigan on Thursday. Jonathan Worsley, Ted Evetts and Ryan Meikle also attained tour-cards, as qualifying school reaches its halfway point at the Robin Park Tennis Centre.

Richardson, who rose to prominence courtesy of a first-round World Championship victory over Five-Time world champion Raymond van Barneveld in December 2011, has endured a difficult few years on the circuit.

However, ‘Ruthless’ lived up to his nickname today, to guarantee his spot on the PDC Pro Tour until 2018. Richardson made a strong start to his campaign, dropping just three legs in defeating both Rhys Hayden and Damian Smith, to progress to the last 64.

Ross Smith, who recorded a nine-darter yesterday, awaited at this stage, but Richardson prevailed 5-3, before reaching the last eight, courtesy of successive deciding leg wins over Luke Woodhouse and Steve Brown.

Richardson faced the Sunpark Masters winner Yordi Meeuwisse in the decisive last eight clash, but ‘Ruthless’ produced a tremendous performance to defeat the Dutchman 5-2 and reclaim his tour card.

The veteran Dennis Smith was denied an automatic tour-card after losing to Ryan Meikle at the final hurdle. Meikle, a 19-year-old from East Anglia, is an unknown quantity in PDC terms, but he recorded a string of fine victories to secure his tour card, including a 5-4 win over former World-finalist Kirk Shepherd in the last 32.

Meikle also defeated Par Riihonen, Craig Lewis, Ben Adams and Jason Marriot, to set up a decisive last eight clash against ‘Smiffy’; a World Championship semi-finalist over 16 years ago. However, experience didn’t prevail on this occasion, as Meikle triumphed 5-4 to record a potentially life-changing victory.

Jonathan Worsley was the third player to secure an automatic tour-card on day two. Worsley began his campaign in the last 512, but he eased through to the last 32, dropping just seven legs in beating David Wilson, Jack Hill, James Welding and Tony Newell.

In the last 32, Worsley dispatched Croatia’s number one, Robert Marijanovic 5-2, before securing a coveted tour-card by virtue of successive 5-4 victories. The 31-year-old defeated former Lakeside semi-finalist Brian Woods in the last 16, before defeating Matthew Dennant 5-4 in a decisive last eight tussle.

However, the biggest story of the day was the performance of 18-year-old Ted Evetts, who defied the odds to secure a tour-card. Evetts, who reached the last 80 at the 2015 World Masters, showed astonishing composure by overcoming four last-leg deciders to win eight matches throughout the course of the day.

He kicked off his campaign with victories of John Newland and Swen Gewalt, before edging past Richard Bailie 5-4 to progress through to the last 64 stage. The 18-year-old defeated Jamie Ellam 5-3 to record his fourth victory of the day, before winning another last-leg decider against former World Championship participant, Finland’s Marko Kantele.

In the last 16, Evetts faced 2006 UK Open finalist Barrie Bates, but he remained unfazed and triumphed in a nail-biting ninth and deciding leg. The Warwickshire ace faced Darron Brown in the pivotal last eight tie, and he held his nerve once more, prevailing by virtue of his third successive deciding-leg victory.

However, whilst it was a day of the underdogs in terms of the automatic card-winners, a number of high-profile players enjoyed good runs, putting themselves in pole position to receive tour cards via the Q-School Order of Merit. Dennis Smith reached the last eight, whilst Barrie Bates, Steve Brown and Brian Woods were all beaten in the last 16.

Nevertheless, a number of other big names suffered premature exits. Peter Manley was beaten 5-1 in the opening round for the second day in succession, whilst former BDO number 3 Jeffrey De Graaf was beaten 5-3 by Darron Brown in the last 256.

Former World-Youth champions James Hubbard and Arron Monk were both dumped out in the last 256, whilst 2005 World Championship finalist Mark Dudbridge was beaten 5-4 by Dick van Dijk at the same stage.

Q-School is a brutal entity; the format is gruelling, and reputations mean nothing to the younger crop of players coming through. A number of established players will have to produce some top performances if they are to remain on the PDC circuit in the coming years.
