Daryl Gurney, Kevin Painter, Alan Norris, John Henderson, Joe Cullen and Joe Murnan enjoyed double-qualification success by sealing their spots in the Gibraltar Darts Trophy and European Darts Matchplay on Friday evening, whilst Phil Taylor only managed to seal his spot in Hamburg, after failing to secure a place in Gibraltar.

This qualification double-header took place at the Barnsley Metrodome ahead of this weekend’s opening Players Championship events. There were a host of big names vying to seal their spots in Gibraltar and Hamburg, and Taylor will be competing in his first European Tour event for 18 months having qualified for the European Darts Matchplay.

However, Taylor, a former Gibraltar Darts Trophy winner back in 2013, will not be able to repeat the feat this year, after he was defeated 6-4 in the final game of the opening night’s qualifier by Ross Smith.

Nevertheless, the 16-time world champion exacted revenge in the night’s second European Tour qualifier, edging out Smith 6-5 before whitewashing Lee Palfreyman 6-0 to seal his place in Germany.

Daryl Gurney and John Henderson, both former European Tour runners-up, will be present in both the 3rd and 4th European Tour events of 2016 after enjoying successful qualification campaigns. They will be joined by Alan Norris, who continued his tremendous 2016 form to qualify for both events.

This talented trio will be joined in both Gibraltar and Hamburg by Joe Murnan, who claimed his first PDC ranking title in 2015, as well as former world finalist and major winner Kevin Painter. Meanwhile, Joe Cullen, who reached his maiden PDC major quarter-final in last weekend’s UK Open, also secured his place in both events.

Jamie Lewis and Steve Beaton, both of whom are former Gibraltar Darts Trophy runners-up, will be making their return to the Victoria Stadium, whilst Stuart Kellett secured his spot in sensational style. The Cheshire ace whitewashed the Canadian duo of Ken MacNeil and John Part, before hitting a 9-dart finish to edge out Steve Hine in a deciding leg.

Former Lakeside champion Stephen Bunting will also be present in ‘The Rock, and he’ll be joined by former Austrian Darts Open winner Justin Pipe. Kyle Anderson, who reached his first PDC major quarter-finals in Minehead last weekend, also sealed qualification to the Gibraltar Darts Trophy with victories over Luke Woodhouse and James Wilson.

It was a successful qualification campaign for a number of veterans. Wayne Jones, Steve West and Mark Walsh were among the final Gibraltar qualifiers, alongside the ever-improving David Pallett, as well as Gerwyn Price, who reached his maiden PDC ranking final in a UK Open qualifier less than one month ago.

In Friday evening’s second qualifier, former Austrian Open finalist Jamie Caven overcame fellow veteran Andy Hamilton to seal his spot in Hamburg. However, ‘The Hammer’ did at least seal his spot in Gibraltar earlier in the evening, with wins against Mark Webster and Shaun Griffiths.

Devon Petersen sealed his place in the European Darts Trophy with victories over Nathan Aspinall and Simon Preston. The enigmatic South African will be joined in Germany by Andrew Gilding and Darren Webster, both of whom qualified by virtue of whitewashes against Sam Head and Ryan Meikle respectively.

The Welsh duo of Mark Webster and Jonny Clayton will also be present in Hamburg after securing qualification in routine fashion. Webster dropped just one leg in trouncing Matthew Dennant and Curtis Hammond, whilst Clayton edged out Dean Winstanley 6-4, before whitewashing ‘The Bronzed Adonis’ Steve Beaton in the decisive final qualifier.

Chris Dobey, Richie Corner, Josh Payne, Jamie Robinson, Jonathan Worsley and Darren Johnson all sealed qualification for the European Darts Trophy and all six players have a major incentive to perform well on German soil, as they seek to make significant strides on the PDC Order of Merit.

However, it was a disappointing evening for a number of high-profile players. Brendan Dolan’s troubles continue as he failed to qualify for either event. The Northern Irishman, a former European Tour finalist himself,  was beaten by Gary Stone and Richie Corner respectively.

Three-time world champion John Part was unable to secure qualification, as was fellow veteran Ronnie Baxter. Former major finalist Wes Newton’s top 32 hopes are in serious danger after ‘The Warrior’ didn’t qualify for either Gibraltar or Hamburg, and former World-Youth champion Keegan Brown was another big name to miss out on both events.
