Last year’s finalist Jeff Smith will face three-time world champion Martin Adams in the second-round of the BDO World Championship after coming from behind to defeat Brian Dawson, as Geert de Vos, Paul Hogan and Lorraine Winstanley all tasted victory at the Lakeside Country Club on Monday evening.
Smith reeled off five consecutive legs to come from behind to dump out twelfth seed Brian Dawson in a topsy-turvy affair. Smith won four of the opening five legs, before Dawson stormed into a 2-1 lead after recording six straight legs. However, ‘The Silencer’ recovered to prevail with a 91.71 average and a 59% checkout success rate.
The 41-year-old defeated Dawson 4-1 in round-two twelve months ago, but he was made to sweat as he defeated the Yorkshireman at Lakeside for the second year in succession. In round-two, the Canadian will face three-time world champion Martin Adams in a repeat of their first-round clash in 2016, where Smith recorded a shock straight sets triumph.
Dawson started the contest sluggishly as Smith hit tops to win the opening two legs in 17 and 16 darts respectively. ‘Doggy’ opened his account on D16, but ‘The Silencer’ was unfazed and converted a regulation 53 checkout on D18 to wrap up the opening set. Continue reading →
BDO world number one Glen Durrant regained his Finder Darts Masters title with a hard-fought 5-3 victory over former winner Jamie Hughes, as three-time world champion Anastasia Dobromyslova edged out home favourite Aileen de Graaf to claim glory in the Ladies event at the Hotel Zuiderduin on Sunday afternoon.
Durrant was in imperious form throughout finals day and controlled the match against ‘Yozza’, who battled resiliently and took out some crucial finishes to remain in contention. However, Glen monopolised the final in the scoring department; posting ten maximums and averaging 97.33, compared to Hughes’ 89.53.
Durrant opened up proceedings with a 19-dart hold, before doubling his lead with a clinical 111 finish. Hughes was struggling for consistency and the world number one rounded off a first set whitewash with a solid 16-darter culminating on tops.
Durrant levelled up proceedings with a 15-darter, before Hughes regained the initiative in the set with a stunning 157 outshot. ‘Duzza’ forced a fifth and decisive leg in the set after following up a maximum with a 63 kill, but ‘Yozza’ held his nerve, restoring parity at one set apiece with a 14-dart hold after the pair had traded maximums.Continue reading →

The 2015 Grand Slam of Darts begins in Wolverhampton on Saturday afternoon and the anticipation and excitement surrounding the event is tangible. It’s the only tournament on the darting calendar where the two darting codes, the PDC and BDO, lock horns.
The addition of Martin Adams and Andy Fordham to this year’s tournament simply adds to the overall spectacle and it will be absolutely fascinating to see how the BDO players fare against their PDC counterparts.
Here is my lowdown on this year’s eight BDO participants, as I also share my views on the ‘friction’ surrounding players from the different codes.
