Trina Gulliver secured her maiden PDC Women’s Series title on Saturday, while Lisa Ashton scooped her fourth title in just six events to extend her lead at the top of the Women’s Series Order of Merit.
Gulliver made a brilliant start to Saturday’s double-header, whitewashing Sharon Godbeer 4-0, before overcoming Wendy Reinstadtler, Jane Monaghan and Lerena Rietbergen to book her place in the quarter-finals.
‘The Golden Girl’ then recorded an impressive 4-1 win over two-time World Championship runner-up Rhian O’Sullivan, before easing past Jane Densley 5-2 to set up a showdown against Laura Turner.
Turner edged out recent WDF World Championship finalist Kirsty Hutchinson in the last eight, before producing a brilliant display to dispatch Fallon Sherrock 5-1 in the semi-finals.
Nevertheless, the Sky Sports commentator was unable to complete the job in the Event Five showpiece, succumbing by the same 5-1 scoreline against ten-time women’s world champion Gulliver.
In Event Six, Ashton continued her blistering start to this year’s Women’s Series by claiming her fourth title of 2022 to move further clear of Sherrock at the top of the Order of Merit.
‘The Lancashire Rose’ was beaten by two-time women’s world champion Mikuru Suzuki in the second round of Event Five, but she stormed through to the last 32 with successive whitewash wins over Sandra Page and Tara Deamer.
The 51-year-old edged out Yukie Sakaguchi in a last-leg shootout before brushing aside former world No 1 Lorraine Winstanley, and she then avenged her earlier defeat against Suzuki by averaging 91 to account for ‘The Miracle’ in another seven-leg tussle.
The four-time women’s world champion progressed to the final with a comfortable 5-1 win over Robyn Byrne, which was followed by a 5-2 success against Turner, who featured in back-to-back finals in Wigan.
This elevates the 38-year-old up to third on the overall Order of Merit, and she’s in a strong position to qualify for the inaugural Women’s World Matchplay in July, which will feature the top eight ranked players after 12 events.
Elsewhere, Sherrock suffered a shock 4-3 defeat to Rietbergen in the second round of Event Six, while Gulliver was comprehensively beaten by Lorraine Hyde in the last 64.
The action resumes with Events 7-8 at the Robin Park Tennis Centre on Sunday, with the top two players from the final PDC Women’s Series Order of Merit assured of PDC World Championship and Grand Slam qualification.
